| NEWSLETTER | The Fly Fishers Club of Orange County was founded in 1966 to further the sport of fly fishing and to provide a meeting function for area residents interested in the sport. In addition to being a way to meet others who enjoyed the sport there were three goals in mind when the club was founded:
Since then the Club has been working hard to meet it goals by sponsoring clinics and workshops, hosting noteworthy speakers, participating in conservation projects and contributing its resources to various conservation organizations such as the Federation of Fly Fishers, Trout Unlimited (TU), Cal Trout, the Nature Conservancy as well as numerous other conservation activities directly beneficial to fly fishing. The Club recently changed its charter so as to be recognized as a qualifying charitable foundation under Section 170 (c) of the Internal Revenue Code. The Club is a participating member club of the South West Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers. The various activities of the Club are outlined below: MONTHLY MEETING: General membership meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of each month, except in November and December when they are held on the third Thursday. Our meeting place is at the Phoenix Club, 1340 South Sanderson Avenue in Anaheim. Meetings start with a cocktail hour (Wet Flies) at 6:15 p.m. followed by dinner and raffle at 7:15 p.m. It is during this period that the club conducts raffle for a drawing later in the evening. Items raffled are fly fishing related. The program begins at 8:15 p.m. and generally last an hour. The program is usually a slide show narrated by someone with expertise in either technique or special knowledge of a particular fly fishing destination. Dinner cost is $20. During Wet Flies we will have the speaker demonstrate their particular fly tying expertise. Our list of speakers include some of the most noteworthy names in the sport. Reservations are not required, in fact we encourage anyone interested in learning about the club to come to one of our monthly meetings. Anyone interested in attending should just "show up" , make sure you indicate that you are visiting for the first time so that we can introduce you to some of our members. Dress is casual. FLY TYING: During the year we offer a number of fly tying classes and clinics. We offer the Basic Fly Tying Class which is offered at no charge, and is conducted by one of our talented members. Throughout the year we have special classes for advanced techniques, these sessions are generally single or double sessions, again conducted by someone with exceptional talent. OUTINGS: Each month the club organizes a fishing outing. Locations range from local waters to more distant destinations. This includes streams, lakes, ponds, and the ocean. The length of an outing is largely dependent upon the distance traveled. A stream keeper is assigned the task of organizing and arranging the trip. In addition to have someone to go fishing with, the outing provides the less experienced fisher to benefit from the those possessing a greater deal of proficiency in the sport. CASTING CLINIC: The Club conducts it annual casting clinic in the spring. This event is open to the public and is offered at no charge to participants. This day long event assists those interested in learning to cast a fly rod or for those wishing to improve their skills. The clinic is lead by an experienced cadre of casters, many of whom are certified as instructors by the Federation of Fly Fishers. ANNUAL AUCTION: Each October the Club has an auction in place of a speaker during its regular Thursday night meeting. This event features primarily fly fishing related items including trips , rods, reels, artwork, flies and other fly fishing materials that is largely donated by members and interested vendors. This is the primary source of funding for club activities. Membership dues basically cover the costs of producing and distributing the newsletter, the fees collected for meals barely cover the dining expenses. This event is, as all events, open to anyone who wishes to participate. THE FFCOC FOUNDATION: During 1990 the club established a vehicle by which it could make an annual contribution relative to the sport of fly fishing. Since its inception, the club has made an annual contribution, in the form of a scholarship, to the Fisheries Program at Humboldt State University. The Foundation, administered by a separate committee comprised of interested club members, has established a fundraising goal so that the scholarship may be given in perpetuity. TROUT IN THE CLASSROOM: Quite simply, TIC is a science class. Students from participating schools in Orange County learn the importance of preserving our natural resources by examining the life cycle of the trout. The club provides the necessary training to participating classroom teacher, and the Club provides the classroom with a refrigerated aquarium. The California Department of Fish & Game furnish rainbow trout eggs. The student is able to observe the early stages of the trout’s development and through this process understand the importance of water quality, and the entire ecosystem. Finally, the student has an opportunity to release their "fry" at a local lake or stream provided by the DF&G. This program continues to grow rapidly throughout the county. COMMUNICATION: The Club communicates to its members by two means, first and foremost has been the newsletter which is published monthly, and mailed to members on a timely basis. The newsletter contain the specifics of upcoming activities, and items of interest to the general membership. The newest means, is the establishment of a web page accessed through the internet. Members can obtain much of the same information contained in the newsletter, and non-members have a means of exploring the various activities of the club. The address of the web site is: http//www.ffcoc.org. Both members and non-members can communicate with board members through the use of email originated at that site. GOVERNANCE: The Club is governed by a board of directors elected annually by the general membership. The term is by calendar year with elections being held in December. The board of directors meets on the first Thursday of the month, and is open to any and all members who wish to participate. The board is responsible for scheduling and administering the activities and business matters of the club as set forth in the clubs by -laws. MEMBERSHIP: Regular membership dues are $35.00 per year. The immediate family of regular members are considered Associate Members and are allowed to participate in all Club events with no dues requirement. The only other membership requirement is to possess an interest in fly fishing. For your convenience we have provided a map for you. Hopefully this will provide adequate driving directions.
